Tips and Tricks for Getting in Last Minute // Yosemite National Park
EP33: Tips and Tricks for Getting in Last Minute // Yosemite National Park
We were checking into our campground outside Yosemite when we realized we needed reservations to get into the park. I was crushed.
When you look online the park entry passes are booked out over a month!
Visiting Yosemite has been a dream of ours and one of our most anticipated stops. Not getting in - just wasn't an option!
It took us 3 days to gain access so I wanted to break it down to hopefully make it easier for those of you who find yourselves in the same scenario.
If you do have time - reservations run about a month or more out. So reserve asap!
Ways to get in last minute:
- Score a 7-day pass at 7 AM sharp PCT (they release a few each morning)
- Enter the Lottery to climb Half-Dome
Other ways to get in:
- Have a backpacking wilderness permit -- there is a way to request this with the Half-Dome permit, however we found all of the available backpacking permits IN the park were taken. First night at 2 AM I accidentally purchased what I thought was a permit to backpack in the park, but in reality they suggested the closest thing available. Don't be like me at 2 in the morning....don't fall for it! Due to it being less than 24 hours, it was non-refundable. :(
- Have a campsite in the park -- for us these were all taken well in advance
Typical, when things aren't going your way - when it rains it pours. Shortly after finding out we couldn't get in, we got to our campground to set up camp in the dark. Next, we realize we have a major hole in our air mattress and basically got to sleep on the ground. Followed by accidentally sleeping through the alarm at midnight to enter our first lottery, entering the Half-Dome lottery at 2 AM, accidentally purchasing the wrong wilderness permit at around 2:30 AM and then waking up extra early and watching the clock inch towards 7 AM to try to get a 7 day pass. The website was SO overloaded it stalled out and after multiple attempts by 7:04 AM it showed all passes sold out. Go Us!
So as terrible as the first night felt - it wasn't all a loss. We scored our Half-Dome permit for Friday (2 days later). The following day we scored the 7 Day Pass to pick-up on Saturday. Horray!!
So here are some tips to hopefully help!
- Be sure to try 48 hours in advance for when you can actually show up to get your day pass. They release tickets not for the day of, but two days after your purchase. You HAVE to be present with the person who made the reservation and have everyone's ID on the exact day of your reservation. If you miss your day, the reservation is void. Once you get your reservation, your car that you registered at the first point of entry is good to come and go for the following 7 consecutive days.
- Use a laptop with good internet, have your phone on standby
- Make an account in advance on recreation.gov
- Be signed into your account prior to attempting to purchase anything
- Be on the correct page to purchase your day pass slightly before 7 AM
- Refresh your webpage right at 7 AM, and fill in your desired selection
- Add to cart as SOON as you see a spot pop up.
- If you get a ticket in the cart, do not refresh your page. When we finally got a ticket into the cart the screen went white. We waited. If this happens, log-on with another device. We had to use my cell phone, logged on and was able to 'access cart' and then purchase the ticket from my phone.
- Once the ticket is in the cart it's on a timer - you have around 10 minutes to pay or you lose it.
- If you get to enter the Half-Dome lottery, you'll be able to register up to 10 people on your lottery ticket. The hitch is that the confirmation only shows for 1. 1 permit, I assume. When you read about having to have the permit, it definitely says each person must be registered. When we won originally I was losing my mind because I knew I entered in for 2 people, but it only showed one. If you go back to your account on recreation.gov and look at lotteries and reservations, it is here you can confirm you have everyone on your ticket. Because I made the reservation at 2 AM and double guessed myself with the confirmation - we entered the lottery the second night as well right at midnight and were not successful. So it doesn't appear to be first come first served. It is a true lottery and they release about 50 permits per lottery.
GOOD LUCK!
