Eye Health: The Current View

"Over half a million Australians aged over 40 are living with some form of vision loss, yet approximately 75 per cent of blindness and vision loss is preventable or treatable. Saving your sight could be as simple as getting an eye test." World Sight Day website Just over 10 million Australians report that they have long-term eye problems. Half a million are suffering from vision loss, 200,000 from glaucoma and a further 100,000 from macular degeneration. Approximately half of the eye-related presentations to general practice are due to a foreign body in the eye and up to 30% of farm accident presentations to emergency departments are eye injuries. Research shows that some common eye problems in rural areas -- such as pterygium, iritis, keratitis and herpes zoster -- are often misdiagnosed. This program examines the glaucoma guidelines, new treatments for macular degeneration, eye trauma and the common presentations in rural communities. Key Messages for this program: Regular eye examinations are the key to early detection of eye health problems and preventable vision loss The theme for World Sight Day on 11 October is prevention All rural health professionals have a role in preventing eye problems and vision loss Produced by the Rural Health Education Foundation http://www.rhef.com.au/
