Roomba won't cross black lines

We love our Roomba and it does a great job on the majority of our floors including wood, carpet, area rugs, etc. BUT, Roomba can't cross black carpet because the optical laser doesn't bounce off black. Roomba responds by changing directions. It sees black the same as the edge of a drop-off such as a stair edge.
