Excel 101 - Favorite Excel Functions: Episode 1645
Microsoft Excel Tutorial: 10 Top Excel Functions for People Starting their Excel journey.
Welcome to the Don't Fear the Spreadsheet podcast. In this episode, we will be discussing our favorite Excel functions. I'm Bill Jelen from MrExcel.com and I will be sharing some of my top picks, along with a special guest appearance from Mike 'Excel is Fun' Girvin, author of "Slaying Excel Dragons."
One of my go-to functions is =COUNTA(), which counts anything that is non-blank in a range. This is especially useful when you need to count text or numbers, as the =COUNT() function only counts numbers. Another handy function for creating random data sets is =INDEX(), which allows you to select a random value from a list. This is great for situations like picking a name out of a hat for a department staff meeting.
For those of you who are constantly doing date math, the =DATE() function is a must-know. It is incredibly versatile and can be used in conjunction with other functions like =YEAR() and =MONTH() to easily manipulate dates. But enough from me, let's hear from our guest podcaster, Mike Girvin, on his favorite Excel functions.
Mike's top picks include the =IF(), =AVERAGE(), =COUNTIFS(), and =SUMIFS() functions. The =IF() function is great for situations where you need to put one of two things in a cell, depending on a logical test. The =AVERAGE() function is perfect for finding the average of a range of cells, and can be easily copied down using the fill handle. The =COUNTIFS() and =SUMIFS() functions are useful for counting and summing values based on multiple criteria.
But don't just take our word for it, check out Mike's book "Slaying Excel Dragons" for a comprehensive guide to conquering Excel's frustrations and making it fun. And be sure to tune in to our next episode where we will be discussing the popular VLOOKUP function. Thanks for listening to the Don't Fear the Spreadsheet podcast, and remember, with the right functions, Excel doesn't have to be scary.
