8 Common Medical School Application Mistakes | Ask Dr. Gray
Today, we're addressing the most common reasons that students get rejected from medical school. Even if you have a few pieces of the puzzle in place, making any one of these med school application mistakes could be enough for schools to not want to take a chance on you.

Okay, so, if you didn't get any interview invites, these are the 8 big areas where I look for weaknesses in the application to explain why:
1. GPA
2. MCAT score
3. Personal Statement
4. Secondary Essays
5. School List
6. Extracurricular Activities
7. Letters of Recommendation
8. Application Timing
(If you did get interviews, then your interviewing also comes into the equation as a possible reason.)
After listing out these top most common medical school application mistakes, we dive into some specific areas of the application.
Our student this week, Mirjam, also asked how someone can still get into medical school after a bad score or bad grades. The answer is that they need to put in fixes, they need to be able to assure the medical schools that they've overcome those problems.
We also cover tips for how to formulate your story for the medical school personal statement: It starts with journaling. You need to remember all these experiences along your journey. Write about your clinical experiences. Write about your shadowing experiences. Then you'll have all these experiences to pull from while working on your application.
But remember that your personal statement is all about why you want to be a doctor. Sometimes I read a personal statement and it doesn't come across why the person wants to be a doctor. So I push the student to really reflect on their reasons. And sometimes I actually convince students *not* to apply to medical school based on that!
With your secondary essays, you need to tell your story in a way that applies to each school and each question that comes at you. Don't sell yourself—tell your story. Use the storytelling technique of "Show, don't tell."
