Sysdig Monitor - How to View Data Through Dashboards and Panels

Hi, I'm Mark Fulton with Sysdig customer success. Today we'll learn about viewing metric data through dashboards and panels in Sysdig Monitor. In the Explorer view of Sysdig Monitor Once a grouping has been defined clicking on any of the objects in the environment will overlay a view where dashboards and individual metrics can be seen. Learn more about Sysdig Monitor: https://sysdig.com/products/monitor/ Let's select our example Java app Kubernetes namespace. We can see with the scope of the overlay that our example Java app has now been selected. You can also see that we've added a second drop-down here enabling us to choose or switch between other dashboards and metrics. Dashboards are split here into default dashboards made available out of the box for common monitoring use cases and my dashboards that have been created in the dashboards feature by the current user in this area here. Just like groupings dashboards and metrics are populated in accordance with the infrastructure auto-detected by Sysdig as well as any other configured app checks. Here are some examples of dashboards populated based on what's configured in our environment. An easy way to find a dashboard or metric is by searching. Let's try out a couple of searches. If we search for overview we can see our physical overview dashboards here for hosting containers as well as some service orientated overview dashboards for Kubernetes. Here we have the Kubernetes state overview and Kubernetes health overview dashboards. We can also search for individual metrics themselves that this view will also display. So if we start by typing the metric name, in this case let's search for the suffix FS we can then see a list of file system-related metrics that we have available for us. Let's go back to our overview dashboard. A dashboard is made up of multiple panels displaying data for the object selected in the environment we see highlighted on the left here. Because we're in the Explorer view the scoping and grouping can be changed at any time. So we can switch for example to viewing the entire infrastructure. So now we have allowed our dashboard panels to be updated here to reflect that or we could change the grouping completely. So we could go for example to a physical host-specific or host-related grouping host and containers. But for now, we'll just keep with our deployments and pods here. The time windows selected on the scale at the bottom of the screen will define the time period for the data. Data will be rolled up in accordance with the time and group aggregation set on the panel. More on these in a later video. Note also that data can be segmented. Segmentation splits the data into smaller sections by using labels. In this panel, segmentation is applied to show disk usage by mount point as opposed to cumulative disk usage that would show without segmentation. As previously mentioned in Explorer we can also look at data for any metric outside of a dashboard or dashboard panel. Let's bring up an individual metric here, FS used percent. We can see that currently we're scoped to the entire infrastructure. It may make sense in this case for us to drill down a little bit deeper and go into the specific Kubernetes namespace for us to get more specific drill-down data. But because of again the grouping definition we could go as low as the actual containers that make up the pod within the deployments themselves if we wanted to. Let's also apply the same segmentation that we saw earlier in the dashboard panel. Now we can see the data split into the different mount points. That wraps it up for now. Next time we'll be looking at creating dashboards and customizing panels in the actual dashboard section of the Sysdig Monitor UI.
