And in that time it's enjoyed several incarnations, including the all-electric Smart ForTwo ED and Smart ForFour ED.  A few years ago, Daimler, Smart's parent company, said that Smart would go all-electric in North America. A year later, it said the entire global Smart brand would go all-electric.  But now, as Daimler CEO and known Smart Car supporter Dieter Zetsche readies for retirement, there's rumors that the Smart Car may not have long to live.
