Why am I so hungry during pregnancy, and what can I do about it?

You mentioned that you're pregnant and you're just having this extreme appetite and you want to eat a lot and eat frequently. This is pretty pretty normal for pregnancy. Your body has extra needs and it's growing a baby and still trying to maintain all of the functions of your body. In the first trimester, women don't actually need extra calories. Once you get to the middle of the second trimester and for sure the third trimester, you do need 200-300 extra calories a day to support your growing baby and yourself. But during the first trimester, that doesn't mean that you're not going to feel extra tired and extra hungry and maybe have some food aversions and some food cravings. These are all normal things to experience during a pregnancy. Also, eating frequent, small meals during the day will help you avoid nausea and vomiting. So, if you're feeling hungry, eat small meals and eat frequently. It might help you feel better all around. It will help you to avoid light-headedness as well as the nausea and vomiting. Try to fill your diet full of healthy foods. Eat whole-grain breads and grains, lots of fruits and vegetables and low-fat dairy, lean protein; all of those things are going to give you and your growing baby good nutrition. Be sure to drink a lot of water, too. If you have any questions about your individual set of circumstances, the light-headedness doesn't go away, you're struggling with other symptoms, be sure to bring them up with your doctor. But if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at facebook.com/intermountainmoms and recommend us to your friends and family, too.
