Titan Sub Disaster: 'Titanic' Director James Cameron Tears Into OceanGate Expeditions

247TV | James Cameron is not just another famed Hollywood director. The Oscar winner is a known daredevil and deep-sea expert Following the Titan submersible disaster that claimed five lives, the Academy Award- winning director criticised OceanGate Expeditions, the company behind the Titan submersible tour, in the harshest of words. Here are his reasons. In an interview, James Cameron, who is no stranger to the deeps of the ocean called Friday's accident as one like never before and avoidable. "We've never had an accident like this. There've never been fatalities at this kind of depth and certainly no implosions," James Cameron was quoted as saying by The New York Times. Here are the points raised by the iconic filmmaker in his criticism of the accident: 1. Material used for design not deep-sea friendly: James Cameron, who boasts the record of having made solitary deep dives began by questioning the choice of material for the Titan submersible's construction. Made of carbon-fibre composites, James Camron told the US media that carbon-fibre composites weigh much less than steel or aluminium although stiffer. The material is not made for deep-sea explorations, he said. Carbon-fiber composite is unequipped to deal with undersea pressure as the vehicle dives deeper. To quote Cameron, it has no "no strength in compression" -- which happens as an undersea vehicle faces a soaring increase in water pressure"It's not what it's designed for," Cameron reportedly said. 2. Safety matters more than profit: Cameron didn't hold back while questioning Stockton Rush, the OceanGate chief executive, for never getting his tourist submersible certified. The iconic director said the company had the responsibility to get safety measures authorised before asking people to entrust their lives with them. "... You can't take that stance when you're putting paying customers into your submersible - when you have innocent guests who trust you and your statements", the NYT quoted him as saying. 3. Hull system questioned: James Cameron was also critical of the sensor network on the vehicle's hull. He reportedly labelled it as an inadequate solution to an intrinsically flawed design. "It's not like a light coming on when the oil in your car is low," he said of the network of hull sensors. "This is different." #oceangate #titan #titanic #jamescameron
