One Cigarette 2 - based on a Poem by Edwin Morgan

This is a poem by Scottish poet Edwin Morgan that I studied at school in the 70s. I also penned the chords and melody at that time. I finally recorded it in 2020 with Karen Adlard on flute. Filled it out a bit in 2022 with better drums and an Organ. Lyric by Edwin Morgan, @ the Estate of Edwin Morgan, by kind permission of Carcanet Press Ltd. Verse 1 G Gmaj7 Fadd9 C No smoke without you, my fire. G Gmaj7 Fadd9 D7 D6 D7 After you left, your cigarette glowed on in my ashtray Em Bm Am D7 and sent up a long thread of such quiet grey Em Bm Am D7 I smiled to wonder who would believe its signal C G C G of so much love. One cigarette in the non-smoker’s tray. Chorus Em Dm sus 6 As the last spire C A7 trembles up, a sudden draught G D blows it winding into my face. Em Dm sus 6 As the last spire C A7 trembles up, a sudden draught G D Is it smell, is it taste? verse 2 You are here again, and I am drunk on your tobacco lips. Out with the light. Let the smoke lie back in the dark. Till I hear the very ash sigh down among the flowers of brass I’ll breathe, and long past midnight, your last kiss. Your Last kiss One cigarette chorus G Gmaj7 Fadd9 C G Lyric by Edwin Morgan, @ the Estate of Edwin Morgan, by kind permission of Carcanet Press Ltd.
