Introduction to TAIPAN

TAIPAN is a new-generation system for financial intelligence units, developed by AUSTRAC. TAIPAN is a powerful tool that financial intelligence analysts can use to detect suspicious financial patterns associated with a range of criminal activities.  Be it narcotics trafficking, corruption, tax evasion or environmental crimes, TAIPAN has been designed to enable AUSTRAC’s regional partners to respond to complex money laundering happening in their country through its innovative approach to data and information. TAIPAN is a cost effective, secure database platform that makes it easy for financial intelligence units to collect, analyse and exchange financial intelligence.  Using open source software, Taipan permits users to maintain, evolve and tailor the system easily, efficiently and at low cost. TAIPAN can be tailored to complement most financial intelligence unit’s existing IT environment and offers: •            The capability to directly ingest data from financial institutions providing efficiencies in data input and data quality. •            Advanced analysis tools giving analysts the ability to simply turn financial data into actionable financial intelligence. •            A secure, cloud-compatible platform using open source software with no associated licensing costs or fees. AUSTRAC is currently working with six Pacific FIUs (Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Tonga, and Samoa) to upgrade their current IT systems under TAIPAN.
