Coast FI involves dropping down a gear with your work such that it is less stressful and then to offset the lower income you receive, you stop making additional investment contributions and let what you already have “coast” you to your desired goal.

Examples of Coast FI include:-
Working fewer days a week
Working nearer to where you live / not in London
Working for a smaller company, less corporate pressure
Changing career to one that is more enjoyable but probably lower paid
Becoming self-employed and focus on the clients you want to work with

In this case study our couple who are 40+ aim to coast FI until their pensions kick in at 57.

The risks they face include:-
A need for health insurance if they can no longer work
A need for flexibility around retirement date as investment returns are uncertain
Not planning correctly for inflation which erodes purchasing power
Not planning correctly for taxes

The couple also want to sell their home, rent and they buy somewhere smaller once they have retired and their kids have left home. This will mean they are out of the property market.

This case study looks at their original plan and whether or not it will succeed and then some suggested tweaks to reduce their tax burden and improve their wealth.
