The quintessential 1980s Ferrari
230 bhp, 2,926 cc DOHC 32-valve 90-degree V-8 engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, five-speed manual transmission, independent front and rear A-arm suspension with coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 92.1 in.
Addendum: Please note that due to California emissions this vehicle will need to be purchased by a dealer or out-of-state resident.
Introduced as the replacement for the Dino 246 in 1975, the 308 has a solid place in Ferrari history. It was designed by Leonardo Fioravanti, of Pininfarina, and quickly won over many enthusiasts for both its looks and performance. It is often associated with the TV show Magnum, P.I., as the 308 GTS played a starring role in the series, capturing the hearts of many as it chased down criminals on the islands of Hawaii with actor Tom Selleck behind the wheel.
The 308 shared both its tube-frame platform and double-wishbone independent suspension with the Ferrari 308 GT/4. The powerplant was a 2,926-cubic centimeter transverse V-8, which, in the updated Quattrovalvole model introduced in 1982, adopted a 32-valve cylinder head. Other changes for this improved model included an available small rear spoiler, additional louvers between the headlamps to aid with the radiator exhaust, and power mirrors, amongst other minor updates. As with earlier 308s, it was offered in both an enclosed coupe version, the GT, and as an open-air model, the GTS, which boasted a targa-style removable roof panel that could be stowed behind the rear seats when not in use. Ultimately, just over 3,000 Spiders would be produced during its three-year model run.
The 308 GTS Quattrovalvole offered here is finished in its original and desirable color combination of Nero over Rosso. Following long-term ownership in Southern California, it was acquired by a marque specialist, for whom it was restored by the craftsmen of Blackhorse Motorsports in Los Angeles. It was the recipient of a thorough restoration, returning it back to like-new condition, which included fully rebuilding the engine, suspension, and transmission. It is reportedly in show-quality condition, showing only 36,499 miles, and is offered from the collection of a devout marque enthusiast.
This is, quite simply, a superb 308 GTS and an icon of its time.
