From Proximity to Power | Courtney Rein & James King | TEDxSanLuisObispo
Seeking to craft social change, Harvard graduate and educator Courtney Rein began volunteering for a free college education program at San Quentin State Prison. It was here that Courtney met James King, a writer who was searching for an opportunity to become a difference maker. Although from different upbringings, they began working together to co-design a high school class called “Voices of Incarceration," to help build a more equitable society. With their commitment to showing how differences are our strengths, James and Courtney speak on the importance of transformative collaboration and how we are all interconnected. Courtney Rein is an educator. Her students have often been her greatest teachers: from young people to students-in-custody. She seeks to democratize the classroom, and to expand its boundaries to include the wisdom that lives at the margins.
James King is a writer. Some of his influences are James Baldwin, Angela Davis, his hometown of Ferguson, MO, and that all oppression must be eradicated. He writes to introduce marginalized perspectives, and he writes to feel whole. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
