St. Elmo's fire in airplane cockpit - Elmsfeuer im Airbus Cockpit

When flying close to thunderstorms ("close" still means several kilometres away) there is often increased static electricity in the air which sometimes leads to static discharges on window frames. In this example there are impressive discharges across the window frames of an Airbus 321 descending close to an area with cumulonimbus clouds and lightning activity.
Active thunderstorm clouds however will be circumnavigated with at least 10 NM lateral distance, sometimes even more is required.

Enjoy!
