A Monk's Guide to Building Self-Worth

Do you find your mood heavily dependent on the praise and validation of others?

When we rely on external sources for our happiness, we can feel trapped and suffer deeply when that validation disappears. In this video, I share wisdom gathered from my brother monks while in Tennessee. We explore why we outsource our self-worth and exactly how to build an internal "power plant" of positive energy to cheer yourself up.

In this video, we cover a 4-step process:

Do More Good Deeds: Engage in wholesome actions, volunteer work, or charitable giving that adds value to your life and others.

Recollect Your Actions: Take photos of your good deeds and keep them in a folder to regularly remind yourself of your positive impact.

Reflect on Your Growth: Look back over a week, a month, or a year to witness the real changes in your habits and character.

Cheer Yourself Up: Use these reflections to internally validate yourself and generate your own brightness without needing outside applause.

Bonus Tip: The 2-Second Rule

Changing habits like laziness or procrastination requires the "cut off" method (tat chai).

When it is time to take action, do not give yourself time to overthink it.

Give yourself two seconds to act—whether that means getting out of bed without hitting snooze or immediately taking out the trash.
