Growing Loquats in South Coastal British Columbia, Canada

This video illustrates the viability of growing loquats in the mild winter temperate climate of the Pacific Northwest. Selecting locally adapted flavourful cultivars is key to consistent and heavy production of high quality fruits. It is best to plant loquats on favourable warm, sunny wind-sheltered sites.

Pollination is not a problem as honeybees readily fly on calm, sunny, warm winter days (higher than 10C) and are highly attracted to the fragrant loquat blossoms. The flowers provide excellent winter forage at a time when little else is available.

Featuring Bob Duncan of Fruit Trees and More Nursery & Demonstration Orchard in North Saanich (near Victoria) British Columbia, Canada. Video created by Allison Gratz. Music by Steppin' In It.
