Aterciopelados: Colombian band treasures Beethoven and Mother Nature | Music Documentary
Aterciopelados from Colombia: with five Grammy nominations, they are one of Latin America’s most successful bands. For 30 years, the famous Colombian band has been performing songs about a better world, with themes of social justice, gender equality, and environmentalism. Many of their songs express a strong connection with nature, and are about water, forests, birds, indigenous people - everything to do with Mother Nature.
To mark Beethoven’s 250th birthday, Aterciopelados played an exclusive concert at the Teatro Colón in Colombia’s capital city, Bogotá. For Andrea Echeverri, singer and guitarist of Aterciopelados, Beethoven was an activist, who - like herself - raised his voice against the ills of the world. Her ambitious goal: saving this planet for at least the next 250 years!
Colombia ranks second worldwide in terms of biodiversity. But half of its ecosystems are at risk. Twelve point seventy-seven percent of Colombia’s land area is protected as national parks. This also includes the Páramos – unique moorlands in the Andes. These are endangered by climate change and mining. Tragically, for many years there has been a serious problem in Colombia with environmentalists being murdered.
Singing in the face of danger: Aterciopelados continue to invoke the love of nature and respect towards women.
In 2020, the world celebrates the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven. With his Sixth Symphony, the “Pastoral,” Beethoven expressed his romantic appreciation of nature, and created a musical testament to that appreciation. Nature continues to inspire composers to this day – as does Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony. Now, that work has also inspired the “Beethoven Pastoral Project," captured by Deutsche Welle in the documentary film, “The Sound of Nature.” It presents five musicians and ensembles on five continents who are currently exploring the themes of nature and the environment. Aterciopelados is one of the ensembles portrayed.
