Most people who spread bet tend to be for the short-term. There is however a misconception that spread betting is only for short-term and I would disagree with that. There is no reason to take a long term position; I did that myself by building a long position in precious metals for instance at one point and ran it for several years. From the point of view of forex markets and spreads that are being offered many trades are being done on an intraday basis though.
Rolling Trades versus Futures Contracts. I like the rolling spread betting trades and that's fine where a cash market exists but there are certain markets where you have to price contracts on futures. Look at oil contracts for instance, these are no based on the cash market but on futures because the cash market is so disparate.
