Hang On Sloopy: Rick Derringer (McCoys) & Liz Brewer (1965 Radio Hit soundtrack)

"Hang On Sloopy" was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1965. Usually I post the earliest video I can find of any given performer(s). This is an exception. I chose this video because it has legs of it's own. McCoy's vocalist Rick Derringer filmed this music video in the mid-'70s with a new incarnation of his band. It is not The McCoys performing in the video, despite the VH1 watermark to that effect. It was a band called "Derringer." However, this is more the McCoys than the original VH1 video. I replaced the audio with a stereo version of The McCoy's 1965 smash recording of "Sloopy." In fact, here you are watching "Derringer" but listening to the McCoys original track.

This more than 45 year old video has a cult following. McCoy's vocalist, Rick Derringer, was filming an updated music video for "Sloopy" in the mid-seventies. But it was not the new incarnation of the band that got fan's attention. It was the girl dancer. The premise was that during the film shoot, a gorgeous girl in a revealing outfit strolls by and embarks on a sexy and captivating dance performance.

You don't have to be a detective to debunk that storyline. This girl was obviously no ordinary passerby. Actually, she was one Liz Brewer -- often described as a rock writer and even a groupie. It seems she also became Liz Derringer, wife of Rick Derringer, until they divorced many years later.

In addition to being the leader of The McCoys in the sixties -- "Sloopy," "Fever," "Sorrow," and "Come On Let's Go" -- Rick Derringer produced records and played lead guitar with Edgar and Johnny Winter in the 1970s. He had a solo hit with "Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo" in 1974 (Billboard Hot 100 peak position #23).
As a kid, living in the NW corner of Washington State, I had great reception of Canadian radio stations. Those of us looking for AM Top-40 radio station in 1965 and '66 often heard the sound of C-FUN out of Vancouver, BC. The video intro harks back to those days.
