Hand cycling through Spina Bifida (Being Me: Jono)
At birth, Jono Nelson was given just 24 hours to live. The Timaru-based hand cyclist, now 37 years old, was born with spina bifida, along with a bi-lateral cleft lip and palate. He then also contracted meningitis at just two weeks old. Throughout his life, Jono has continued to defy perceptions and predictions about his abilities. In 2021, he’s taking on his biggest physical challenge yet - as the only hand cyclist competing in the gruelling Mitoq K2 cycle challenge around the Coromandel Peninsula - a race of almost 200kms, with over 2300 metres of ascent, considered the toughest race in the Southern Hemisphere.
