The Walk I Didn’t Want to Take - The Mason Dixon Trail

I didn’t want to take this walk because I equate the name of the trail with hatred.

I’ve learned the history of the name which isn’t all about hatred and nonetheless, that’s what floats on for me and my heart wants to crack open on the pavement screaming “Don’t go to the places where hatred lives!”

My friend @pawsandplaynola explained to me why I should walk in such places. He explained how he ran and ran and ran on a plantation on behalf of all of those people who weren’t able to run.

So the other day, I walked where many people could not walk or who bravely sought freedom and the first step was crossing this line.

Imagine my surprise when I kept following the blue blazes of the trail and found an abandoned railroad line.

Naturally.

Another emblematic sighting, another symbol.

After a while I hugged some trees on the trail (there will be videos posted) and sat by a creek and just let myself feel as many feelings as I was comfortable allowing.

Now, three days later, I knew I had to share before I chickened out - afraid of crying, afraid of falling to my knees and face planting where people might not understand this crazy old tender-hearted white lady making a scene.

I’ll go back. I’ll go farther. I’ll be more comfortable being appropriately sad and afraid.

Not all of history is pretty AND we need to learn to hold what happened in our memory.

Can you believe I want to visit the Whitney Plantation? This is one of many warm ups to that.

I was also thinking about Sojourner Truth and being in the play bearing her name where I played a mean old white lady. How much I hated it and thankfully my friend Althea who played Sojourner forgave me and Maceo, who I loved singing, hugging and crying with each night… they understood.

In fact, right now it’s even more important that we remember.
