When Your PCB Looks Great But... | 1 Min PCB Design Review

Tech Consultant Zach Peterson reviews an STM32-based three-phase inverter PCB that showcases the classic trap many designers fall into - focusing on aesthetics while overlooking critical design rule violations.

Zach examines a beautifully laid out board with mechanical enclosure modeling and proper screw placement, but discovers 60 DRC violations and 31 waived violations hiding beneath the surface. This design review highlights important lessons about clearance violations, copper allocation strategies, and thermal management considerations for high-current applications.

In this rapid-fire analysis, Zach identifies specific issues including board edge clearance violations on the 5V line, problematic copper islands, and suboptimal layer allocation between ground and VBUS planes. The designer clearly invested significant effort in schematic development and gate drive snubber testing, but the layout reveals fundamental issues that could impact manufacturability and performance. This review demonstrates why thorough DRC checking and proper copper distribution are just as important as visual appeal in professional PCB design.
