6.4.1 - Three-Party Coaching: The Kickoff Conversation | Coach as Operator

There's a pattern in B2B coaching failures — not coaching failures, contractual failures. The coach starts working. Three months in, the sponsor asks: 'Can you tell me how it's going?' The coach isn't sure what they agreed to share. The coachee isn't sure what the sponsor will hear. The sponsor isn't sure what they're paying for. None of this is about coaching skill. All of it is about what was and wasn't made explicit before session one. The three-party setup is the move that prevents this.

Walks the kickoff conversation anatomy — a structured three-way meeting that takes thirty minutes and sets the terms for everything that follows. This lesson is where CC 3 (Establishes and Maintains Agreements) and CC 1 (Demonstrates Ethical Practice) apply directly to sponsored executive coaching. Not as compliance language — as the practical instrument that makes B2B engagements work.

In this lesson:
• Why CC 3 — Establishes and Maintains Agreements (ICF Core Competency 3, sub-competencies 3.3 and 3.4) explicitly requires the agreement to be established at all three levels: organizational, engagement, and session
• Why CC 1 — Demonstrates Ethical Practice (ICF Core Competency 1, sub-competency 1.5) requires the confidentiality boundary to be stated explicitly to all parties — not inferred from the coaching agreement document
• The kickoff conversation anatomy: who's in the room, what gets established, and what each party leaves with
• The exact confidentiality disclosure language — not a description of the language, the actual words to say
• Why sponsor check-ins should always include the coachee — and why this is a CC 1 ethical practice move, not just a relationship preference
• How ICF Code of Ethics Standards 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, and 3.1 anchor each element of the kickoff conversation
