The Reality of Sailing the Bahamas in Winter
Winter cruising in the Bahamas isn’t always calm seas and endless sunshine. During this time of year, life aboard our sailboat becomes a balancing act between enjoying the incredible anchorages and staying one step ahead of the next cold front.
In this episode, we make our way to George Town, the social hub of the Exumas, where hundreds of cruising boats gather each winter in Elizabeth Harbour. After spending time in the quieter anchorages throughout the islands, arriving here felt like stepping into a completely different world filled with busy beaches and constant dinghy traffic.
But while George Town is an exciting stop for many cruisers, a major weather system soon rolls through, forcing everyone to hunker down and wait out the strong winds and rough conditions. Once the weather finally clears, we decide to leave the crowded harbor behind and set sail for Long Island in search of quieter anchorages and a slower pace once again.
If you’ve ever wondered what winter sailing in the Bahamas is really like, this episode gives a look at both sides of cruising life out here—the breathtaking anchorages everyone dreams about, and the constant challenge of planning around the weather.
If you're new here, we're Dylan and Teresa! We are full time cruisers living aboard our 1988 Morgan Out Island Classic. Before purchasing our boat in 2024, we had very little sailing experience so we're still learning as we go!
