Trump sabotages Senate bid to fast-track Clayton as DNI, committee scuttles hearing

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he is canceling the confirmation hearing for Jay Clayton, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, who had been nominated to serve as Director of National Intelligence (DNI).

Following Trump's announcement, the Senate Intelligence Committee canceled the hearing that had been scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. The committee’s top Democrat, Senator Mark Warner, suggested that the administration may be preparing to withdraw Clayton’s nomination altogether.

Any delay in confirming a permanent DNI — and the continued service of acting DNI Bill Pulte — could complicate efforts to secure reauthorization of a key U.S. intelligence authority.
