Wind Turbine Design to Prevent Blades Hitting the Tower

Want to know how wind turbine designers make sure that the blades can't hit the tower?

In this video I am going to talk about how to choose whether to put the blades upwind or downwind of the tower, and then some other things you can do to keep the blades well out of the way of the tower including rotor tilt and overhang, and something that I think is a particularly clever design solution: prebending the blades away from the tower.

The software I used at e.g. 03:53 is Ashes:

If you want to calculate the effect of different cone angles or tilt then you can find it in Burton's "Wind Energy Handbook." There is also really good information about all the other turbine components that are affected by blade weight and stiffness, and some discussion about tradeoffs.

Available to buy from Amazon (affiliate link), or your university library probably has it!
