I love the Italian spaghetti bolognese and consider it one of my comfort foods but the Filipino spaghetti has a special place in my heart. This recipe makes a yummy spaghetti that does not use pre-packaged pasta sauce or ketchup.
The Philippine version of the spaghetti bolognese is a staple at parties and everyday home meals. You can also find it served in popular fast foods such as Jollibee and McDonald’s. Filipino spaghetti is characteristically sweet. It’s has a subtle smokey flavor that comes from the hot dogs that are added in the sauce.
Make “eat” home! Try this recipe and let me know what you think.
Filipino Spaghetti Recipe (Inspired by Jollibee Spaghetti)
Ingredients
½ large onion, minced
4 garlic cloves, minced
½ red bell pepper, minced
1 lb ground beef
1 cup beef broth
29 oz canned tomato sauce
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 tsp dried oregano
2-4 tbsp brown sugar
4 hotdogs, sliced diagonally
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 pack 16 oz spaghetti, cooked
Olive oil, for sauteing
Grated cheese, to serve
Directions
1. Mince the onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Slice the hotdogs diagonally.
2. Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the onion and saute until tender. Add the garlic and saute until fragrant. Add bell peppers and cook for 2-4 minutes. Mix in the ground beef and fry until meat is slightly browned. Add beef broth, canned tomato sauce, tomato paste, dried oregano, and brown sugar. Stir the sauce in between additions. Add the hotdogs. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes on low heat. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
3. Cook the spaghetti according to the package directions.
4. Serve the sauce over the spaghetti. Top with grated cheese.
Tips
The amount of sugar to use in this recipe would depend on how sweet you would like your pasta sauce to be.
Three-cheddar cheese (sharp cheddar, mild cheddar, and fontina) blend was used in this recipe. Velveeta cheese can be used, which is similar to the cheese used in the Philippines.
