Alcohol dependency is not your fault part 3

It’s not your fault that alcohol became normal.

Most of us were raised around it.

We saw it at family gatherings, weddings, funerals, birthdays, barbecues, sporting events, restaurants, pubs, clubs and knock-off drinks.

We saw people use it to relax.

To celebrate.

To cope.

To grieve.

To connect.

To escape.

Then we grew up and saw it promoted everywhere.

In movies.

On TV.

In sport.

In music.

On social media.

At every second corner with another bottle shop.

Especially here in Australia, alcohol has been tied into so much of our culture that many people never stop to question it.

But there is a cost.

Alcohol is not just a harmless reward at the end of the day.

It can affect sleep, anxiety, mood, relationships, health, decision making and the way we handle pressure.

Cancer Council Australia states that drinking alcohol increases the risk of cancers including bowel, breast, mouth, throat, voice box, oesophagus and liver. The World Health Organization also identifies alcohol as a toxic, psychoactive and dependence-producing substance, and classifies it as a Group 1 carcinogen.

Most people were never clearly taught that.

They were sold the good times, not the full picture.

So no, I don’t believe it is your fault that alcohol became your off switch.

But once we see it clearly, we can start taking responsibility for what comes next.

Not through shame.

Through education.

Through structure.

Through support.

Through learning better ways to relax, calm the mind, handle pressure and find peace.

That is why this has become my mission.

To help people understand they are not broken.

They were conditioned.

And there is another way.
