No matter how good an actor might be, they’re never too good to be replaced. It doesn’t matter how many Oscars they have, how much money their inclusion rakes it. If they’re not right for the part, if they don’t fit in with the director’s vision, they’re just as disposable as any lesser being. You might be surprised to learn how often recasting happens, even with some of the biggest productions out there. And in many cases, the decision to recast ends up being for the best. The final products almost always benefit.

For instance, while Viggo Mortensen would go on to fill the shoes of Aragorn, son of Arathorn, in Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lord of the Rings Trilogy,’ originally Stuart Townsend was cast in the role. Jackson and his team quickly realized Townsend was too young and subsequently recast the role with Mortensen. In a more baffling story, Christian Bale was cast as Patrick Bateman in Mary Harron’s ‘American Psycho’ adaptation. However, the studio wanted a bigger name and forced Harron to recast the role with Leonardo DiCaprio. When DiCaprio didn’t work out, Harron got her original casting choice and Bale was re-recast in the role.

Other big roles that were recast include Megan Fox in the ‘Transformers’ films, Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly in ‘Back to the Future’ and even Natalie Portman in Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Romeo + Juliet.’ And we’ve got plenty more where that came from. Let’s dive in and take a look at some of the biggest recasting stories Hollywood has to offer.
