James Webb Confirmed There's Something Wrong With Our Understanding of the Universe

This is called the Hubble Tension — and it's one of the biggest unsolved problems in modern physics.

The universe is expanding. We can measure that rate. The problem: two completely independent methods of measuring it give different answers. The early universe method — using the Cosmic Microwave Background — gives roughly 67 km/s per megaparsec. The local method — using Cepheid stars and supernovae — gives roughly 73 km/s per megaparsec.

That gap shouldn't exist. For years, scientists hoped it was instrument error. In 2023, the James Webb Space Telescope confirmed the local measurements with unprecedented precision — ruling out measurement error entirely.

The conflict is real. Which means either our understanding of the early universe is wrong, our understanding of the late universe is wrong, or there is physics we haven't discovered yet.

Our standard model of cosmology has worked for decades. Webb just confirmed it may be incomplete.
