...AND GOD CREATED MAN: The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo Buonarroti
THE CREATION OF ADAM by Michelangelo Buonarroti, c. 1512, 280 cm × 570 cm (9 ft 2 in × 18 ft 8 in), fresco
THIS PAINTING IS AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE AS A HANDMADE OIL REPRODUCTION FROM 1ST ART GALLERY: https://www.1st-art-gallery.com/Michelangelo-Buonarroti/Creation-Of-Adam-1510.html
ABOUT THIS PAINTING: You could safely say the Sistine Chapel Ceiling is the single greatest artistic achievement in the western world. It covers approximately 1200 square feet, includes 343 figures, and took one man, Michelangelo, four years to paint, standing on a scaffold 70 feet in the air.
At the center of this work are nine main panels that recount the Book of Genesis. But this panel, entitled, The Creation of Adam is perhaps the most famous. It portrays that very moment when God is about to give life to the first man on earth.
Adam is reclined and languid, exerting the barest energy, extending his hand to God. He comes to life fully formed, and naked, the most monumental, beautiful male figure in art history.
In contrast God is clothed, and floats into the scene enveloped in a billowing red cloak, surrounded by an entourage. God extends his hand as well, to Adam. The two hands are so close and yet they don’t quite connect, creating tension and anticipation.
Much has be made of the shape of this cloak. Seen in profile, it resembles the human brain. Another hypothesis is that the shape represents a female uterus or womb, and the green scarf is an umbilical cord. Which might explain why Adam has a navel, since he was supposed to be created by God, and not born. None of these anatomical references would be beyond Michelangelo, as he had a staggering knowledge of anatomy.
Protected in the crook of God’s arm is Eve, and the other figures the future progeny of the first man and woman.
Between 1980 and 1994 the Sistine Chapel went through a major restoration, removing centuries of pollution and soot from candles. To the dismay of many in the art world, it was revealed that Michelangelo was the most wonderful colorist, and in this humble narrator’s opinion, the greatest artist of all time.
