Mira A pulsating giant in the Whale #space #astronomy #universe
This video features the pulsating variable red giant Mira.
Mira (Mira means 'wonderful' in Latin) is the name used for this specific type of pulsating star. It is the prototype of the Mira variables.
Mira, or Omicron Ceti is located 300 light-years away from the Sun in the constellation of Cetus.
Mira is a binary star system consists of a red giant (Mira, designated Mira A) is undergoing mass loss from a high-temperature white dwarf companion (Mira B) that is accreting mass from the primary star.
The pulsations of Mira variables cause the star to expand and contract, and to change its temperature. When Mira expands it can reach a radius of 400 times the size of our Sun.
Mira's pulsation period is 332 days and varies from magnitude 10 brightening up to magnitude 2.
Astronomy videos are uploaded every day. Bright stars, Deep sky objects, Globular clusters, Galaxies, the Sun and Sunspot activity, the Moon and it's craters and it's Phases. These videos are accompanied by a short description and explanation as to why these amazing objects in the night sky and in the day time are fun and interesting to be viewed and understood. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq6p0IcbAV8JYSZtaFcHKVw?sub_confirmation=1
