The End of Ramadan in Senegal

The end of Ramadan is a very much anticipated event in the Senegalese culture. It signifies the end of the Holy Month, which included a long period of strict fasting during the day.

It is also known as the Eid, which celebrates of the return to a more natural disposition (fitra) of eating, drinking, and marital intimacy.

In polar regions, by the way, where the sun doesn't often set for more than 22 hours, many Muslims adapt to the time of the nearest city that experiences dusk and dawn, while others follow Mecca time.

Eid is a time of sharing, giving and enjoying life. We visited different places to see how people celebrate the Eid to learn more about this tradition.
