MonkeyBats full version
My MTV video debut! Monkeybats! 1989.
This was my start in the music industry during a fantastic moment in music history. Back then in the mid 1980’s, rock bands actually had to feature a virtuoso guitar player. This time window was from about 1984 to the mid 90’s. Like all music “movements” they lasted only a few years.
MTV ruled during this time….everyone was on MTV including me! Then all of a sudden the wave shifts.. Bands like Nirvana etc..pushing them aside. …love those bands too, but less guitar features of virtuoso guitar dazzle in that style persay. My musical hero’s and influences are Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai, Dime Bag Darrell, Zappa, Fripp and many others. And, I loved it!
As a violinist, I wanted to stand side by side with the guitar gunslingers! Spandex pants, makeup, BIG hair and all!
Never interested in actually playing guitar, I just wanted to hang as an equal to my musical hero’s as a violinist!
And remember: The violin has been around for over 400 years. All the greatest composers in history wrote 1000s of virtuoso concertos and features from Bach to Paganini and to the future!
AND I had the power of the bow!
So, here I walk into the door with my self made, double neck 6 string and 9 string violin
(the Violator)and the “hand” violin and made presentations to all the record companies.
Finally got signed and the adventure of a lifetime started……….to be continued…..
The video edit features my “Duel” with a “traditional” string quartet….responding to my Juilliard days. Also, my great band of misfits: Dave Lewitt, Tom Kaz, and Paul Morris!
Video directed by: Jeff Kennedy
