Install A Manual Reset Switch On Your Model Railroad (425)

As we have seen in the last year leaving a layout unattended with trains running can be a safety hazard. And it is even possible to get distracted and not notice a short circuit no your model railroad. For that reason I recommend installing a manual reset switch for each electronic circuit breaker, and yes you need circuit breakers! In this video I'll show you how to set up a momentary pushbutton for this purpose with 3 popular circuit breakers that I have reviewed in previous videos.

The pushbutton switch I used has an internal LED and came from China via Ali Express and I'll try to find the current vendor for them and provide a link. But if I can't locate them just look on aliexpress.com for momentary pushbutton switches with LEDs. Be aware that most are rated for 12VDC whereas the circuit breakers provide 5VDC or even less so the LED will be dim unless you can find one rated for 5VDC. However you can also just use a momentary pushbutton switch and separate LED available off Amazon, eBay, and various electronic parts websites. Remember that the NCE an DCC Concepts devices use a normally open (NO) switch whereas the PSXX requires a normally closed (NC) switch. The one I used in the video, purchased from a Chinese vendor on Ali Express can be wired either as NO or NC.

ADDENDUM (5/22)—I found a set of these on Ali Express with LEDs rated at 3-9VDC and ordered them. I’ll let you know how they work once they arrive from China.

Note that in the PSXX diagram a resistor is shown to dim the LED if required. The circuit provides 5VDC so if you find a pushbutton rated for 5VDC or greater the resistor is not needed.
