The 9 Days That Saved 400,000 Men From Certain Death

Operation Dynamo was the emergency evacuation of Allied forces from Dunkirk between May 26 and June 4, 1940, after German forces trapped British and French armies against the sea.

In just nine days, around 338,000 soldiers were rescued—far more than planners thought possible. Alongside Royal Navy destroyers, hundreds of civilian vessels—fishing boats, ferries, yachts—crossed the English Channel to ferry troops from the beaches to larger ships offshore.

Though a retreat, Dunkirk became a powerful symbol of resilience and unity. As Winston Churchill later warned, “Wars are not won by evacuations,” but Operation Dynamo preserved the core of the Allied armies—making future victory possible.
