Mangroves - Coastal forests threatened by the shrimp industry

In the brackish water of the tropical and sub-tropical coasts, where sea and fresh water meet, a dense entanglement of roots forms a unique habitat: The mangroves. The bizarre, intertidal forests provide effective protection against erosion and flood waves, a habitat for countless animal species as well as guaranteeing the livelihoods of the coastal regions inhabitants.

These unique biotopes can also be found along Brazil's coastline - for the time being. Today, they are more endangered than ever: Globally, half of the mangrove forests have been destroyed, due to urban development, hotel complexes and most of all because of the expanding shrimps industry. This film depicts life in the Brazilian mangroves, how the inhabitants live from and in the mangroves and also documents the destruction. We accompany scientists from the Bremen Centre for Marine Tropics Ecology, in addition to those already conducting ecosystem research and seeking possibilities to protect the region.
