What It's Like to Have Invisalign - Things I Wish I Had Known!

I started Invisalign in April of 2019. And 1.5 years later in October 2020, I'm finished! I completed three "rounds" of Invisalign. My first round was 18 sets of trays (two week wear). After completing my first round of sets, I still had some teeth that needed minor movement. I also had one stubborn tooth that just didn't want to move! So I was rescanned and then was given another 14 sets of trays to complete (one week wear). That one tooth was a bugger! At one point I was moved to wearing my trays for three weeks at a time until that tooth would move.

After completing the second round, I was scanned a third time for the "refinement" stage. This is just another stage to see if there are any final tweaks for your teeth. They gave me 25 sets! Yikes. So ANOTHER six months. Those were just one week wear and the last 5 sets were essentially retainers.

So, here I am 1.5 years later and FINALLY done! Every case is different of course.

First round: 18 aligner sets
Second round: 14 sets
Third round: 25 sets (refinement)

ATTACHMENTS - (buttons) are adhered to your teeth to keep aligners in place.

BEVERAGES - Don't drink anything besides water with the aligners in or they will become discolored.

FILING - I had to have my teeth filed down in between to make space for my teeth to move. 😬 this caused a lot of extra space for food to get in between my teeth with all of the gaps. So, the flossing after eating is super important.

BRUSHING/FLOSSING - You should brush and floss after eating everytime.

CLEANING: I used a mild non-antibacterial soap and a toothbrush to clean the aligners. I also used Invisalign cleaning crystals once a week.

WEAR TIME - You'll definitely want to wear your aligners for the 20-22 hours/day. Even just an hour without them in your teeth will have moved!

WHITENING - Your teeth might stain over the course of your treatment. I waited until I was completed to whiten my teeth. Aligner trays can be used as whitening trays. My dental office provided me with a $25 tube of carbamide whitening gel.
