Research Department of Neuroscience, Ruhr University Bochum, Germany

The Department of Neuroscience at the Ruhr University Bochum hosts more than 500 neuroscientists and is one of Europe’s leading neuroscience research centres. The department’s mission is to achieve an understanding of the functional architecture of the brain. This is only possible by focusing on the whole neural system. This mission cuts across classic academic boundaries – integrating biology, biochemistry, medicine, psychology and neuroinformatics to provide an integrative research platform that truly reaches from bench to bedside.

These close transdisciplinary collaborations have spawned major grant-funded research consortia to explore how sensory information is integrated in the brain and translated into memory and cognition. The department has founded the International Graduate School of Neuroscience (IGSN). IGSN is an English-language multidisciplinary approach to training young scientists for a career in the neurosciences. The program is considered a best practice example for schools worldwide and has a tremendous international reputation.
