ETRI Real-Time Holographic Technology: 4K Holograms, 3D Potential, and More!

ETRI (Electronic and Telecommunications Research Institute), introduces their real-time holographic process, which is based in Korea. The company utilizes FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) technology in their system, where multiple FPGAs are employed to drive the PCA Ultra Scale. This system is designed to accept video input through various sources, including PC and HDMI. The core of their technology involves a CGH (Computer Generated Holography) program, which processes the input and, within a remarkable 22 milliseconds, generates a hologram. The hologram is then displayed using an SLM (Spatial Light Modulator) and an optical system.

To capture the hologram, a camera is used, as the brightness in the area where the hologram is displayed makes it challenging to see directly. The camera is connected to a monitor, allowing real-time observation of the holographic images. ETRI's system boasts impressive speed, as the hologram becomes visible within just 22 milliseconds. The hologram is not only visually appealing but also incorporates sound, making it an immersive experience.

ETRI highlights the versatility of their technology, which extends to animations and characters. Users can project 4K holographic images and even engage in real-time video calls, effectively turning ordinary video footage into real-time holography. Their system employs a special light modulator to achieve these effects. The technology runs on FPGA, with a specific focus on the Cortex architecture, reducing the need for additional devices.

ETRI clarifies that their current system primarily produces 2D holograms, emphasizing the existence of multiple layers in the holographic display. They acknowledge that this is the first version of their system, and their future goal is to support 3D holograms, suggesting the potential for a wide variety of holographic applications.
