OPERATION COBRA: Cracking Down On The Ivory Trade | Animal Black Ops | Our World

February 2001. Tsavo National Park. A family of elephants, ten in all, massacred in a single attack. The Kenya Wildlife Service catch the poachers and discover papers linking the men to ivory dealers in Somalia.

The Kenya Wildlife Service is determined to stop the cross border raids. In 2007 rangers are engaged in a firefight with suspected poachers. Three rangers and two poachers are killed. The investigation reveals the men belong to Islamic terrorist group Al Shabaab. They conclude Al Shabaab are killing elephants and selling the ivory to the Far East. Their findings are backed up an undercover investigation carried out by a group called The Elephant Action League. The EAL believe Al Shabaab is selling up to three tons of ivory per month.

Their findings are seized on by politicians such as Hilary Clinton after the Al Shabaab attack on Nairobi’s Westgate shopping centre resulting in the death of sixty seven people. In November 2013 a major international law operation called Cobra is launched to crack down on the ivory trade. One significant member is China – the world’s biggest market for ivory. The contribution of China leads to the breaking of a major smuggling ring based in Kenya run by Chinese nationals. The hope is operations such as Cobra will help disrupt Al Shabaab’s ivory trade and help to secure the future of Kenya’s elephants.
