The Holy Grail
http://www.britsattheirbest.com/archives/004821.php The Holy Grail is a dish, plate, stone, or cup that is part of an important theme of Arthurian literature A Grail not so wondrous" first appears in Perceval le Gallois ( Perceval The Welshman )" Perceval, the story of the Grail" an unfinished romance by Chrétien de Troyes: Chrétien's story attracted many continuators, translators and interpreters in the later 12th and early 13th centuries. The Grail legend became interwoven with legends of the Holy Chalice. The connection with Joseph of Arimathea and with vessels associated with the Last Supper and crucifixion of Jesus, dates from Robert de Boron's Joseph d'Arimathie (late 12th century) in which Joseph receives the Grail from an apparition of Jesus and sends it with his followers to Great Britain. Building upon this theme, later writers recounted how Joseph used the Grail to catch Christ's blood while interring him and how he founded a line of guardians to keep it safe in Britain. The legend may combine Christian lore with a Celtic myth of a cauldron endowed with special powers.
In old Cymric ( Welsh ) literature and other sources such as the works of Chrétien de Troyes Caradoc Vreichvras ( Caradog Freichfras, meaning Caradoc Strong (or Stout) Arm) was a semi-legendary ancestor to the kings of Gwent. He lived during the 5th or 6th century. He is remembered in Arthurian legend as a Knight of the Round Table as Carados Briefbras (French )
Caradoc appears in the Welsh Triads, ; his horse is named as Lluagor ("Host-Splitter"). His wife, Tegau Eurfron ( "pretty eurfron: ") is also celebrated in the Welsh Triads as one of the Three Splendid Maidens at Arthur's court, and the couple's great love is called one of the Three Surpassing Bonds of Love in Ynys Prydain ( Islands Of Britain ). This tradition is possibly dealt with in a 12th. century French romance
Caradoc appears frequently in Arthurian literature, and even starred in his own romance, the Life of Caradoc included in the First Continuation of Chrétien de Troyes's Perceval, the Story of the Grail.
