Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila Trek | April 2025

Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world, located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India. It is perched at an elevation of 3,680 meters (12,073 feet) and is the third in the pecking order of the Panch Kedar temples. The temple is believed to be over 1,000 years old. 

The Chopta Chandrashila trek is generally considered a moderate trek, suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers. It involves some steep ascents and descents, but is manageable for those with a reasonable level of fitness. The trek's difficulty is particularly influenced by weather conditions, with snow-covered paths during winter requiring caution. 

Chandrashila is the summit above Tungnath temple in India. It literally means "Moon Rock". It is located at a height of about 3,690 metres (12,110 ft) above sea level. This peak provides views of the Himalayas, including Nandadevi, Trisul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch and Chaukhamba peaks. There are various legends associated with this place. According to one such legend, this is where Rama meditated after defeating the demon-king Ravana. Another legend says that the moon-god Chandra spent time here in penance.
