How One Disaster Destroyed America's Most Promising City: Galveston, Texas

In 1900, Galveston, Texas was the richest city in the state — the largest cotton port on the Gulf Coast, home to more millionaires per capita than anywhere in America, and filled with grand Victorian architecture designed by Nicholas Clayton. On September 8, a Category 4 hurricane delivered a fifteen-foot storm surge over an island whose highest point stood less than nine feet above the sea. Between six thousand and twelve thousand people died in a single night, making it the deadliest natural disaster in United States history. What followed was one of the most ambitious engineering projects America has ever seen: a seventeen-foot concrete seawall and the raising of an entire city on jackscrews and dredged sand. The wall held. But fifty miles inland, Houston had already begun digging a ship channel to the sea — and when Spindletop blew four months after the hurricane, the oil went where the safe port was. This is the story of how one Saturday in September moved the future of Texas off a barrier island and onto a bayou, and why the greatest seawall ever built became a monument to a question history had already stopped asking.
