"...Joseph Karl Migursky, Polish by birth, lived and worked in Odessa. Migorsky was a professional portraitist and the author of the first book in Russian detailing instructioins on portrait photography. The "Practical textbook on photography on its latest improvements and applications" was published in Odessa in 1859 and consisted of valuable information for that time giving advice and recommendations.
In addition, in the late 1850s he founded the Photographic Institute, located on Policeman Street, in Odessa, in a house belonging to the Catholic Church.
He was highly regarded in his field and noneone in the city had done more to populise the art of photography, together with teaching the basics of photographic equipment. Migursky was the first public lecturer to lecture on phototechnology in the auditoriums of the Richelieu Lyceum (1863), attended not only by the lyceum students and teachers, but also by all Odesa residents......"

No one was better suited in taking a series of photographs of the reconstruction of the Odessa port than he. These are his photographs of that construction....
