'KPop Demon Hunters' sing-along event races toward selling out as it hits 1,700 screens
"KPop Demon Hunters," the runaway Netflix hit of the summer, is making the rare jump from streaming to theaters.

The film follows three animated K-pop stars as they perform synthy earworms and hide their true demon-slayer identities from fans, and has become the streaming giant's second most-watched movie of all time. To celebrate, Netflix is offering up the film for theatrical viewing during a two-day sing-along event Aug. 23-24.

"Demon Hunters" will appear on approximately 1,700 screens across the U.S. and Canada, with over 1,000 of the shows already sold out. Cinemark, among the movie houses offering the screenings, still has seats available, but confirmed that some of their showings were "very full."

Grounding the film's success is a growing fascination with the K-pop (Korean pop) genre. As streaming services like Spotify hack the artificial barriers separating one culture's hits from another's, American music fans are growing increasingly eager to dabble in international fare. K-pop, which claims a large and loyal fanbase in the U.S., slots into a burgeoning trend alongside genres like Reggaeton and Afrobeats.


"Demon Hunters" creates a fictional girl group not unlike Blackpink, the multi-member hit-making machine that helped fuel America's K-pop fever. As they work to hunt demons, they're pitted against a similarly popular boy group, not unlike BTS, or the other synchronized dancing collectives that are a hallmark of the genre.
The cast includes stars like Ken Jeong and Daniel Dae Kim, and the music, a success in its own right, has been steadily climbing up the charts as the film hops borders. Earlier this month, "Golden," performed by the cast, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

For a film industry hungry for a new formula for success, "Demon Hunters" may offer a telling clue to what viewers are searching for − whether from their AMC recliner, or the one in their living room.
