Early Colonial Carpentry (180 VR)

The family and I take a quick tour of Henricus Historical Park in Chesterfield, VA. It features a recreated 17th century fortification and plantation up the river from Jamestown, Virginia. This small yet mighty county-run museum has a great interpretive staff who not only discuss history but also maintain the gardens, clothing, and animals onsite.

In this video, we pay particular attention to how English colonists constructed the buildings and tools they needed to operate a successful farm and military base. Using technology and building styles familiar to them, they adapted their approach to construction as their access to resources shifted.

Wattle- The act or product of weaving wooden branches or sticks through a framework. Can be used for fences and walls.
Daub- A mixture of sand, clay, manure, and plant fiber used to build earthen walls
Thatch- Using reeds stitched in tight bundles as roofing
Clapboard- Riven (split) hardwood used in overlapping layers for roofs and walls.

Please drop a like if this is the kind of thing you want to see, and drop a dislike if you found it nauseating.

Music: Gordon Jacob: "William Byrd Suite: The Earle of Oxford's Marche" performed by "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band
