In-Car Video: David Freiburger 208 MPH Camaro at El Mirage Dry Lake

In-car video of Freiburger running 208.791 mph to set a record at El Mirage Dry Lake and get into the El Mirage 200 MPH Club on May 2, 2021! This is in a 1981 Chevy Camaro known as the Hot Rod Magazine Special, and the car also holds records at the Bonneville Salt Flats. There’s SO much to see, you’re gonna have to run through it a few times. 1) Watch through the middle of the windshield to see how much the tail wags down the track. 2) Notice, from start to finish, how much dust builds up in the car. 3) Watch the tach needle jump as the tires break loose at the top of First and again at the top of Second, and I pedal it to recover. 4) At the end of the run, watch my hand go to the parachute, then back to the shifter, then back to the chute. Watch the tach at the same time. We had too high of a gear in the car, and at 200 mph I had to decide if I was going to leave the trans in Third across the finish line or if I’d shift. I had decided to stay in Third and put my hand on the chute, but then the engine hit the rev limiter at 8,200 rpm and I reached to shift—but the engine nosing over upset the car and kicked the rear sideways, so I immediately snatched the chute to pull the car straight. 5) From clutch-out to pulling the parachute is 34 seconds. 6) Look carefully and you’ll see the finish line marker pass by AFTER I pulled the parachute. I deploy the chute early so that it blossoms immediately after I’m through the timing trap. Wait too long and you’re off the end of the track. 7) After I turn off, I’m super chill at like 150 mph putting the chute cable back. When strapped in the car, I can’t see the chute handle or any switches. 8) At the end, SCTA officials Rick Head and Lee Kennedy have rolled to a stop alongside me and tell me my time. Rick asks if I had permission to go that fast, which I did. 9) Going back to the start, note SCTA officials Nick Arias III and Jill Iverson sending me off. You’ll see that the push truck has me already moving when I put the car in First and take off.
