Creative Process With The Great Teddy Riley
My Teddy Riley Story
It was past midnight when I received a call from a wonderful friend of mine. She asked what kind of camera did I shoot with? I told her the name, but she needed to know more specifics about the camera like was it 3CCD etc. I gave her all of the information required. Then she told me that I might be needed to shoot for one of her clients and she'd let me know by 4 am.
4 am had come and gone and I hadn't heard anything back, I gave her a call and a text just to follow up but didn't get a response so I thought nothing of it. I get calls to shoot all kinds of events often so it wasn't a big deal. Besides, I had no idea who the "client was."
6:35 am she (my friend) gave me a call, "JJ can you make it to Hollywood by 7am?" Just in case you are not familiar with Los Angeles to get from West Hills to Hollywood during rush hour in less than thirty minutes is like Ben Wallace trying to make a free throw while blindfolded and intoxicated (Possible but unlikely). My response was, a bit hesitant. I didn't feel like I had enough time to make it, in addition to that I have a thing when it comes to being on time (Early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable).
Just as I was preparing to decline the job, I asked "who would I be shooting for?" She couldn't even get the first letter out before I almost had a heart attack. Teddy Riley was the response, first of all I have always loved his music especially his work with Guy. Most of all I had heard that he was working on some material with Michael Jackson. Close friends and family knows what that means to me, and to everyone else just so you know, the only person I consider to be a true celebrity is MJ. I admired him so much that I would make this story too long to even get into it.
Anyhow, I automatically knew that Michael would be in the studio with Teddy Riley, and there was nothing, absolutely nothing going to stop me from getting there on time. I wasn't dressed when I got the call. Before Riley came out of her mouth I was fully dressed and running out of my apartment to the car. I rushed to Laurel Canyon then dashed over the hill to Hollywood. This is true I got to the studio location around 6:57 am
